Before we dive into vivid colors in the form of other details – let’s talk about the origin of the Holi festival.
Origin – How the Festival of Holi Began?
As per the Hindu religion, the word Holi is derived from Holika – Holika was the sister of king Hiranyakashyap.
It was during Satya Yuga when in the demon world, it was the reign of Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap’s son Prahalad was the earnest devotee of Lord Vishnu – who was believed to be the demon’s enemy according to his father.
After many failed attempts to change Prahalad’s mind, at last, Hiranyakashyap told Holika to kill Prahalad. Since Holika was blessed to get no harm from fire, she sat in the fire with Prahalad in her lap. But, it was an act of disgrace, and so Holika’s blessing didn’t work and failed to save her from the flames of fire. On the other hand, Prahalad got no harm – he was saved by his immovable belief in doing the right thing, in God.
It was the victory of good over evil. Since then, that day has been celebrated in the name of Holi to get reminded of that message.
